Search Engine Optimization is complex, technical, and constantly changing, so how do you know which SEO agency to pick, or if your current SEO agency isn't selling you snake oil?

Without going into all of the complexities of SEO, there are three things you need to ask for from your SEO Agency or SEO Freelancer:

  1. Work Completed: SEO isn't magic; it takes a lot of hard work, so an SEO agency shouldn't have an issue reporting work completed for that month. Aligning with the hours agreed upon.
  2. Leads Generated: How are they increasing your call volume and leads? This isn't easy to optimize for but should be easy to explain. Every agency should track and optimize for lead generation, setting a roadmap (goals) for your success.
  3. Fixing Drops: Organic traffic is constantly fluctuating, sometimes it up, sometimes it down. That is just the nature of the business. When your traffic suddenly drops your SEO agency should have noticed it first and come to you with a plan to fix it.

Agencies often send many linking and keyword reports, which overwhelms the client; since most people don't understand it, they assume work is being completed.

The key here is to have your SEO agency or freelancer show you the work completed. You don't always need to understand it, the same as getting your car repaired; you don't need to know how an engine works, but you can tell your car is running smoothly again. If anyone is dishonest with you, it always catches up to them.
